Every empire has an origin story, and Google's begins not with a handshake but with an argument.

In the summer of 1995, a 22-year-old named Larry Page visited Stanford University as a prospective computer-science graduate student. As part of the weekend, a group of newcomers was shown around campus and around San Francisco. One of the students assigned to give tours was Sergey Brin, 21, already a couple of years into his own PhD at Stanford.

They spent the day together — and, by nearly every account including their own, they spent most of it disagreeing. About the city, about ideas, about seemingly everything. Brin thought Page was obnoxious. Page thought Brin was pushy and opinionated. It was not love at first sight. It was closer to a debate that never quite ended.

Two minds built for argument

What neither realized that day was how much they had in common. Both were sons of academics who had grown up surrounded by computers and mathematics.

Larry Page was born in East Lansing, Michigan, in 1973. His father was a computer-science professor and an early researcher in artificial intelligence; his mother taught computer programming. Page later said there were computers and tech magazines scattered around the house for as long as he could remember. He was the kind of kid who took his tools apart to see how they worked.

Sergey Brin was born the same year in Moscow. His family, facing antisemitism in the Soviet Union, emigrated to the United States in 1979 when Sergey was six. His father became a mathematics professor at the University of Maryland; his mother was a researcher at NASA. Brin inherited the family gift for math and a restless, provocative streak.

Both had also, as children, attended Montessori schools — something both would later credit for teaching them to question rules, follow their own curiosity, and not simply do what they were told. It's a small detail, but it echoes through everything Google would become.

From rivals to collaborators

Page enrolled at Stanford that fall and began casting around for a dissertation topic under advisor Terry Winograd. He was fascinated by a deceptively simple question: the World Wide Web was a giant graph of pages connected by links — what could you learn if you studied that structure mathematically? In particular, what did it mean when one page linked to another?

The two students who had bickered all through that first tour kept running into each other on campus, and the arguments gradually turned into collaboration. Brin, still searching for a thesis topic of his own, was drawn to the mathematical elegance of Page's idea. The friction that made them terrible tour companions made them an extraordinary research pair: each one relentlessly challenged the other, and the ideas that survived were stronger for it.

Page called his project "BackRub" — a name that referred to the way it analyzed the web's back links. It would run on borrowed hardware, hog Stanford's bandwidth, and quietly grow into one of the most valuable ideas of the century.

The takeaway

Google didn't start with a business plan or a mission statement. It started with two stubborn, brilliant graduate students who disagreed about almost everything — and discovered that arguing with each other produced better answers than either could reach alone. That dynamic, more than any single algorithm, is the real seed of the company.
