On the afternoon of August 10, 2015, Google put out a blog post with a title that read like a children's book: G is for Google. It was written by Larry Page, and by the time readers reached the second paragraph they realized they were watching one of the largest companies on earth quietly turn itself inside out. Google was not being sold. It was not being broken up. It was being demoted — folded into a brand-new parent company that, until that morning, nobody outside a small circle knew existed. Its name was Alphabet.

The idea sounds simple once you see it, but almost nobody saw it coming. For seventeen years "Google" had meant everything the founders touched: search, ads, YouTube, Android, self-driving cars, balloons that beam internet, a company trying to cure death. Page's insight was that stuffing all of that under one brand had become a problem. Search and ads were a hyper-profitable, disciplined business. A lab trying to extend the human lifespan was not. Judging them by the same yardstick was making both worse. So he drew a new box around the whole thing and split it in two.

The letter that redrew the org chart

Page's letter was disarmingly plain-spoken. "Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies," he wrote. "The largest of which, of course, is Google." Under the new structure, Google would keep the "slightly slimmed down" core — search, advertising, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Maps, and the apps billions of people used every day. Everything "pretty far afield of our main internet products" would be lifted out and run as a separate business under Alphabet: Calico, the anti-aging venture; Nest, the smart-home company; Google Fiber; the investment arms; and the X moonshot lab we met last part.

The reshuffle came with a game of musical chairs at the very top. Page became CEO of Alphabet, with co-founder Sergey Brin as President and Eric Schmidt — the "adult supervision" from Part 9 — moving up to Executive Chairman. And in the single most consequential line of the letter, Page handed the keys to Google itself, the crown jewel, to a soft-spoken engineer who had climbed from managing the Chrome toolbar to running the entire product line: Sundar Pichai. It was the clearest succession signal Google had ever sent.

Why "Alphabet"? And why abc.xyz?

The name was pure Larry Page — nerdy, layered, and a little pleased with itself. "We liked the name Alphabet," he wrote, "because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity's most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search!" Then came the wink: "We also like that it means alpha-bet (Alpha is investment return above benchmark), which we strive for!" A holding company, a language metaphor, and a finance pun, all in one word.

There was just one snag. Google didn't own alphabet.com — BMW did, and still does, using it for a fleet-management subsidiary founded back in 1997. Rather than fight for it, the new company set up shop at the delightfully strange address abc.xyz, leaning into the new .xyz domain. It was a fitting metaphor for the whole exercise: the most valuable name in tech had to improvise a home on the web because someone got there first.

A cage with a glass wall

Underneath the wordplay was a hard-nosed piece of financial engineering, and its architect was Ruth Porat, the former Morgan Stanley CFO whom Page and Brin had lured to Silicon Valley just months earlier. Wall Street had long grumbled that Google spent lavishly on wild projects while revealing almost nothing about them. Alphabet's structure forced daylight in. Starting with its first earnings report under the new name, the company split its results into two buckets: "Google," and "Other Bets."

The numbers, once separated, told a stark story. For 2015, the Other Bets collectively brought in about $448 million in revenue — and posted an operating loss of roughly $3.57 billion. For the first time, investors could see exactly how much the moonshots were costing, isolated from the search-and-ads machine that generated nearly all of the company's profit. Far from spooking the market, the transparency thrilled it. Alphabet's stock jumped, because clarity, it turned out, was worth more than mystery.

That was the quiet genius of the restructuring. It didn't cut a single moonshot. It gave each big bet its own CEO, its own budget, and its own accountability — independence to prosper or fail on its own terms, in Page's words — while walling their losses off from Google's balance sheet so the market could judge each piece on its merits. The founders got to keep chasing the future; Wall Street got its spreadsheets. Everyone, improbably, walked away happy.

The stock tickers never even changed — GOOGL and GOOG carried straight over. To an ordinary shareholder, almost nothing looked different on October 2, 2015, the day Alphabet legally came into being. But the plumbing underneath had been completely re-piped, and it set the stage for what came next. With the money machine humming and the moonshots ring-fenced, Page and Pichai were about to point the whole enterprise at a single, all-consuming idea. Next time: the pivot to "AI first" — DeepMind, TensorFlow, and the bet that would define Google's second act.
